While the requirements for background actors can vary depending on the production, there are some general expectations to keep in mind: Most productions will require the following: RESIDENCY INFORMATION: ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR SIN NUMBER PLEASE SO YOU CAN GET PAID Please BRING ALL of your residency information. Minors can bring their parents info. It is for Tax Credits. Individual residency documents: - Most recent Notice of Assessment no later then the previous year OR - THREE (3) of the following documents: a) Valid Driver’s License or vehicle registration b) Provincial Health Card c) Short-term (less than a year) lease agreement with the address and lease dates visible d) Union membership card e) Bank statement, RRSP statement, credit card statement or a utility bill from November or December 2023. *** Provincial Services Card that includes a Health Card and a Driver’s License counts as two documents. **If you are a member of UBCP only two documents from the above list are required** ***Prepared Background Actors will ensure they have a file folder of at least 5 sets of copies readily available to bring to set on a moments call Appearance: Background actors should possess a natural look that fits the scene’s setting, whether it’s contemporary or period-specific. This may involve specific hairstyles, clothing, or makeup to accurately portray a particular time period or location. Flexibility: Being flexible with availability and schedule is crucial for background actors. Shooting days can be long and may change at short notice. It’s important to be adaptable and willing to work in different locations and environments. Professionalism: Background actors must conduct themselves professionally on set. This includes following instructions, respecting the principal actors, crew, and production team, and maintaining a positive attitude throughout the filming process.

Before the casting process begins, casting directors review scripts and collaborate with production teams to gain a clear understanding of the scene’s requirements. They determine the number and type of background actors needed, ensuring that each character fits seamlessly into the narrative. Registering Online: Many casting directors now require actors to register online before being considered for roles. This allows them to easily access a database of potential background actors. The main website used in BC is AGENCY CLICK(see link below) - By registering here and ensuring you enter VA Entertainment as the AGENT you will send a notification to our team that you would like to be added to our roster of Background Actors. We will then send you an email with our standard talent agreement and STAT sheet to be filled out. **Please note: This is an outside platform standard in BC this is not VA Entertainments site. Submission: Once casting Directors put out their Casting Call Notice, our agents look at the availability presented within our roster on Agency Click and submit all that would suit the role (s) requested. Selection: After reviewing submissions, the casting director will choose the background actors who best fit the requirements of the scene. This decision is based on factors such as appearance, versatility, and ability to take direction. If selected, actors will receive a call or email with further details regarding the shoot. Being chosen as a background actor is an exciting opportunity to be a part of the filmmaking process. As a background actor, it’s essential to understand your role and responsibilities on set: Following Direction: Listen carefully to the director and assistant directors who will provide instructions on where to stand, how to move, and how to convey the desired atmosphere. Staying Engaged: Even though you may not have speaking lines, it’s crucial to stay engaged and present while on set. This includes reacting naturally to the scene and staying in character. Being Adaptable: Be ready for unexpected changes or last-minute adjustments. Adaptability is key in the fast-paced world of production. Interacting with Principal Actors and Crew While on set: you may have the opportunity to interact with principal actors and the crew. It’s important to approach these interactions with respect, professionalism, and a positive attitude. Never initiate or interrupt an actor onset - Remember they are there to get into and stay in character and your approaching them could interfere in their job. MOST SHOWS HAVE A NO PICTURE TAKING RULE ON SET. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE NOT TAKING ANY PICTURES. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IS TO BE UPLOADED TO SOCIAL MEDIA SITES. IN MOST CASES IF YOU ARE CAUGHT DOING SO YOU WILL BE TERMINATED IMMEDIATELY. Remember, the set is a collaborative environment, and everyone is working together to bring the project to life. PLEASE NOTE THAT EXTRA WORK IS AN ALL DAY COMMITMENT AND YOU WILL BE THERE UNTIL FILMING IS FINISHED SHOOTING THE SCENES FOR THE DAY! OR UNTIL YOU ARE WRAPPED BY PRODUCTION.

Once you’ve been selected for a background role, it’s essential to be prepared for your casting call. To make a lasting impression, consider the following tips: Research the Project: Familiarize yourself with the production you will be a part of. Take the time to watch episodes or films from the same series or genre to gain a better understanding of the style and tone. Keep an eye on your email and Read through all emails closely: it’s crucial to read your Prelim, Wardrobe and Final Call time emails thoroughly to ensure you are fully prepared for the casting call. These emails will provide important information such as the date, time, location, wardrobe requirements, and any specific instructions or documents you may need to bring. Wardrobe: Always bring at least 3-5 outfit options. Have these organized neatly or bring on hangers to ensure they stay pressed and do not get wrinkled in your bag. (The more always the better) Bring accessories like a shawl, scarf, tie, hat, handbag, jacket, overcoat, etc. Hair and makeup bring your hair accessories and extra makeup just in case you need to touch anything up. Arrive in the outfit you think is most suitable. You will be seen by Hair / Makeup / Wardrobe crew when you are in BG Holding. They will assist you in picking out the best outfit for your role. (Please note: production is not responsible for any lost or stolen items so always keep them safe) DOs AND DON'Ts TO WARDROBE  Avoid bright & bold solid colours, including large amounts of white/black. No bold busy prints - stripes/zig zags/bold floral patterns.  No visible logos or obvious branding.  Arrive with makeup applied as normal (not heavy).  No bright nail lacquer. Please advise casting if your nails have permanent/fancy/bright finishes. Please let casting know if you have visible tattoos in advance of booking. You may be asked to bring wardrobe to cover them. Arrive on Time: Punctuality shows professionalism and respect for the production’s schedule.
